AP CHEMISTRY SUMMER WORK
Welcome to AP Chemistry! AP chemistry is an AWESOME and CHALLENGING class. Students who do well in AP chemistry are tenacious. They work hard, and when the material gets difficult, they work harder. If you continue to challenge yourself academically, you will eventually reach a point where your natural ability is not sufficient. For many students, AP chemistry is that point. This class is MUCH MORE CHALLENGING than PreAP/Advanced Chemistry. Students who take this class will be required to complete summer work so that you are prepared for the first day of class. Practice as much or as little as you need to be confident that you know the material. There is not grade for the "work" but there will be quizzes and tests over this material during the first two weeks of school and there will not be any class time devoted to review.
MANDATORY MATERIALS: Purchase before the first day of school
- Get a dedicated AP chemistry journal/notebook. You will want one place to keep all of your notes. My personal preference is a bound (composition-style) journal because they tend to hold up better for the whole year. It does not matter if it is lined or graph-paper pages.
- Buy an AP chemistry prep book. There is no textbook for AP chemistry. Your prep book is your textbook. It does not matter which prep book you purchase. Used (good condition) purchases from Amazon are fine. The two prep books that come most highly recommended from previous students are:
- AP Chemistry Crash Course by Adrian Dingle
- The Princeton Review - Cracking the AP Chemistry Exam
EVALUATE YOUR CURRENT STUDY SKILLS:
1. Download the "assessment-of-study-skills" document and BE HONEST. 2. Watch the following videos describing science-based study skills that you will need to develop to be successful in this class. |
